Editorial Independence

Muckraker Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to investigative journalism in the public interest. We maintain full editorial independence in all aspects of our work, from story selection through publication. This page explains how that independence is structured and preserved.

Organizational Independence

Muckraker Foundation is a tax-exempt nonprofit under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It operates with its own leadership, budget, and editorial authority, separate from any for-profit media company.

Donations made to the Foundation are used exclusively for the Foundation's nonprofit mission. There is no commingling of funds between the Foundation and any other organization.

From time to time, outside organizations may contribute completed investigations to the Foundation for public release. When this occurs, the contributed content is clearly labeled with a production credit and is reviewed by the Foundation's editorial staff before publication.

Any organization that wishes to republish Foundation reporting does so under the same licensing terms available to all qualifying news outlets, with no preferential access or editorial influence. The Foundation's board of directors reviews transactions involving related parties to ensure they are conducted at arm's length and consistent with the Foundation's exempt purpose.

Donor Independence

Muckraker Foundation's journalism is funded by individual donors and institutional supporters who believe in the value of independent investigative reporting. No donor, sponsor, partner, or outside organization has any authority over story selection, reporting methodology, editorial review, or the timing of publication.

We do not accept funding that is conditioned on specific editorial outcomes or that is earmarked for advocacy. The Foundation does not engage in lobbying activities. Our obligation is to our audience and to the facts, not to the preferences of any financial supporter.

Editorial Control

All editorial decisions at Muckraker Foundation are made by our reporters and editorial leadership. This includes which stories to pursue, how to conduct investigations, what to publish, and when to publish it. No person or entity outside the newsroom has the ability to review, alter, delay, or block any reporting prior to publication.
